Light had to feature significantly, as did the creation of plenty of storage, including a utility space.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Unusually for a period house, the couple wanted a relaxed industrial aesthetic, a concept that was driven by Ella, who\u2019d created scrapbooks packed with inspiring room schemes and quirky ideas. \u2018Ella had tons of creative ideas,\u2019 says Poulsom, \u2018and we discussed the pros and cons of these concepts and materials \u2013 a collaboration that really paid dividends.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Ella also knew she wanted a side extension to help transform the skinny, 1.5 metre dead space down the side of the house into a dining room, and she\u2019d taken the time to visit several neighbours who\u2019d already done this.<\/p><div class=\"gdmag-content-2\" id=\"gdmag-3477495461\" data-cfpa=\"19928\" data-cfpw=\"19928\"><div class=\"gdmag-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><!-- code from Primis - granddesignsmagazine.com -->\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\" language=\"javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/live.primis.tech\/live\/liveView.php?s=116493&schain=1.0,1!grv.media,65,1\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- code from Primis --><\/div><script type=\"text\/javascript\">;new advadsCfpAd( 19928 );<\/script>\n<div id=\"attachment_639\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-639\" class=\"wp-image-639 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Victorian-terrace-city-house-side-extension1.jpg\" alt=\"Victorian terrace city house side extension4\" width=\"630\" height=\"475\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Victorian-terrace-city-house-side-extension1.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Victorian-terrace-city-house-side-extension1-250x188.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Victorian-terrace-city-house-side-extension1-120x90.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-639\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Jefferson Smith<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The initial scheme, for which planning was granted, was for the side extension to go right to the edge of the existing house, but it quickly became apparent that this posed serious problems.<\/p>\n<p>Not only would it have meant completely removing the original side wall to the rear room with its period features and replacing the two-storey chimney stack, it also required a lengthy structural steel.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We realised that the steel just wouldn\u2019t fit through the narrow access,\u2019 says Poulsom, \u2018which meant we\u2019d have had the prohibitive cost of hiring a huge crane and closing the whole road.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, the plans were reworked to reduce the length of the extension, which meant they stayed on budget, and the revised plan still created a dining room, with the adjacent kitchen lit by borrowed light from the glazed roof.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Actually, I think the final scheme works better than our original plans,\u2019 says Poulsom. \u2018Ella and Tom now have a functional door to the garden that they use for easy access, as well as the large, living-room doors that play more of a social role for when the family is relaxing or entertaining.\u2019<\/p><div class=\"gdmag-prop-primary-mpu\" id=\"gdmag-3565969245\" data-cfpa=\"20294\" data-cfpw=\"20294\"><div class=\"gdmag-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><div class=\"GRVMpuWrapper\"><div class=\"GRVAd inline\" data-ad-type=\"mpu\" data-ad-sizes=\"[[300,250]]\" data-ad-refreshmapping=\"always\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><script type=\"text\/javascript\">;new advadsCfpAd( 20294 );<\/script>\n<div id=\"attachment_640\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-640\" class=\"wp-image-640 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Victorian-terrace-city-house-side-extension2.jpg\" alt=\"exposed brick wall pow wall mural skylight wooden dining table 8 chairs \" width=\"630\" height=\"475\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Victorian-terrace-city-house-side-extension2.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Victorian-terrace-city-house-side-extension2-250x188.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Victorian-terrace-city-house-side-extension2-120x90.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-640\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Jefferson Smith<\/p><\/div>\n<p>To fit in with their busy lives, Ella and Tom chose a full architectural service \u2013 from consultation to snagging \u2013 with <a href=\"https:\/\/poulsommiddlehurst.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Poulsom Middlehurst<\/a> overseeing all work and appointing a main contractor.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018How we work with clients is often down to how much time, energy and money they can devote to the project,\u2019 says Poulsom. \u2018A full service is far less stressful for the owners, and we\u2019re constantly on site to ensure that the quality of the work doesn\u2019t suffer, which can sometimes happen if it\u2019s handed over to a builder.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>During the work the couple de-camped to their respective parent\u2019s houses, with Tom staying in London for work while Ella headed to Hampshire for her maternity leave.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I came to rely on Amy, who was amazing,\u2019 says Ella. \u2018I tried to visit the site a few times a week, but if I couldn\u2019t make it and decisions needed to be made Amy would take stacks of photos and we\u2019d go over everything via email and phone. It could have been really stressful, but she was calm and understanding throughout the whole process.\u2019<\/p><div class=\"gdmag-prop-in-content-mpu\" id=\"gdmag-1804746507\" data-cfpa=\"20294\" data-cfpw=\"20294\"><div class=\"gdmag-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><div class=\"GRVMpuWrapper\"><div class=\"GRVAd inline\" data-ad-type=\"mpu\" data-ad-sizes=\"[[300,250]]\" data-ad-refreshmapping=\"always\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><script type=\"text\/javascript\">;new advadsCfpAd( 20294 );<\/script>\n<p>Work progressed smoothly until the arrival of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/glazing\/windows\/large-windows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">glazed<\/a> roof, which \u2018became a bit of a nightmare,\u2019 says Ella. Because of the limited access they\u2019d opted for panels of glazing, and the first delivery and installation had to be postponed due to bad weather.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17923\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17923\" class=\"wp-image-17923 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Photo-Jefferson-Smith.jpg\" alt=\"Photo: Jefferson Smith\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Photo-Jefferson-Smith.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Photo-Jefferson-Smith-250x188.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Photo-Jefferson-Smith-120x90.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-17923\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Jefferson Smith<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u2018But when they finally arrived on site, one of the units was cracked and needed replacing, which meant for a while we actually had a temporary corrugated iron roof \u2013 not quite what we\u2019d imagined,\u2019 she says.<\/p>\n<p>Re-establishing a link between the house and garden was a major focus, and as part of this, bi-fold doors came up in discussion a lot, but Poulsom felt that the slim-framed doors by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.govettewindows.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Govette Windows<\/a> were a more fitting solution.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Bi-folds are great, but they\u2019re costly and have substantial frames that dominate the glazing, and this wouldn\u2019t have felt right in this space. What\u2019s more, they go right to the wall, and sometimes you need nooks inside a room for tables and armchairs \u2013 corners help make a room feel cosy,\u2019 she says.<\/p><div class=\"gdmag-prop-in-content-mpu-2\" id=\"gdmag-2063077476\" data-cfpa=\"20294\" data-cfpw=\"20294\"><div class=\"gdmag-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><div class=\"GRVMpuWrapper\"><div class=\"GRVAd inline\" data-ad-type=\"mpu\" data-ad-sizes=\"[[300,250]]\" data-ad-refreshmapping=\"always\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><script type=\"text\/javascript\">;new advadsCfpAd( 20294 );<\/script>\n<p>The glazed doors, with their nod to Fifties functionality, work well with the industrial feel that Ella wanted, which the exposed-brick wall helps create.<\/p>\n<p>But it is the flow of the space that makes the project such a success, as the rooms maintain their individual identity despite being part of a single open-plan scheme. \u2018I love the way the spaces are quite distinct, so although you read the room as one large space, it functions as a suite of rooms,\u2019 says Amy.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_642\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-642\" class=\"wp-image-642 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Victorian-terrace-city-house-side-extension4.jpg\" alt=\"Secret door book cover wallpaper wooden steps\" width=\"630\" height=\"475\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Victorian-terrace-city-house-side-extension4.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Victorian-terrace-city-house-side-extension4-250x188.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Victorian-terrace-city-house-side-extension4-120x90.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-642\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Jefferson Smith<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Further adding to this sense of delineated space, the utility is a room within a room, creating a side wall and cosy corner for the rear living room. This internal room is visually played down thanks to a hidden door, a detail borrowed from a far earlier period in architecture.<\/p>\n<p>Like the wardrobes in the master bedroom, the flush, push-catch door is papered over, complete with its own skirting board, with the entire wall of wallpaper coated in a thin matt varnish to protect it from marking.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Everyone loves the secret door,&#8217; says Ella, &#8216;and the treated paper is fantastic, especially with our one-year-old son Rafferty&#8217;s sticky fingers all over it, as he loves pointing out his favourite books.&#8217;<\/p><div class=\"gdmag-prop-in-content-mpu-3\" id=\"gdmag-1104654193\" data-cfpa=\"20294\" data-cfpw=\"20294\"><div class=\"gdmag-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><div class=\"GRVMpuWrapper\"><div class=\"GRVAd inline\" data-ad-type=\"mpu\" data-ad-sizes=\"[[300,250]]\" data-ad-refreshmapping=\"always\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><script type=\"text\/javascript\">;new advadsCfpAd( 20294 );<\/script>\n<p>For Ella and Tom, the work has been a brilliant investment that has transformed the way they use the house. Although it&#8217;s not physically added that much extra square footage.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It feels so much bigger,&#8217; says Ella. &#8216;Before the refurbishment, we use to avoid the gloomy, shambolic downstairs with its narrow warren of rooms, but now we spend all our time in this light, airy open-plan space.
