Nathan and Amye Marshall tackled a complex self build in South Lincolnshire, creating space for Nathan&#8217;s teenage children, plus his mother and step-father.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan and Amye were originally looking for a barn to convert, but every site they found presented too many challenges. When a local building plot came up for purchase, they decided to build their own barn entirely from scratch. Therefore channelling the distinctive agricultural buildings native to Lincolnshire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The only snag was that planning permission had previously been denied. \u2018I\u2019ve never been shy of a challenge, so we bought the land anyway knowing exactly what the risks would be,\u2019 he says.<\/p><div class=\"gdmag-content\" id=\"gdmag-239472643\" data-cfpa=\"20295\" data-cfpw=\"20295\"><div class=\"gdmag-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><div class=\"GRVMpuWrapper mobile\"><div class=\"GRVAd inline mobile\" data-ad-type=\"primary-mpu\" data-ad-label=\"mpu\" data-ad-sizemapping=\"primary-mpu\" data-ad-sizes=\"[[300,250],[300,600],[320,480]]\" data-ad-refreshmapping=\"always\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><script type=\"text\/javascript\">;new advadsCfpAd( 20295 );<\/script>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The plot is next to one of the Dutch barn-style houses characteristic of this part of Lincolnshire. With distinctive mansard roofs, steeply sloping gables and dormer windows, they are a legacy of the Land Settlement <\/span>Association. Photo: Andy Haslam<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Local vernacular<\/h2>\n<p>Nathan, who is a builder and entrepreneur by trade, is more used to constructing estate housing. Located on reclaimed marshland and designed to withstand rising water levels, the steel-framed main house is reminiscent of a Dutch barn and echoes the double-mansard silhouette of local buildings. But this one has a few unexpected twists, from glamorously glazed gables and twin brick chimneys to all-over tile cladding. And thus began the Grand Designs Dutch barn project.<\/p>\n<h2>A multi-angled steel-framed structure<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Chartered architectural technologist Kris Baxter of Studio 11 Architecture grew up in the area and knew the houses well. Therefore, when Nathan and Amye asked him to devise a scheme to favour with the planners, he knew exactly where to look for inspiration. \u2018I pulled features from these houses into the design as they are intrinsic to the landscape,\u2019 says Kris. \u2018It was nice to celebrate them in a contemporary context.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">He proposed a multi-angled steel-framed structure to give the silhouette of a mansard. But, with a glazed gable and a giant brick chimney at each end. To lessen the building\u2019s impact in the flat Fenland countryside, the exterior \u2013 from the apex of the roof right down to ground level \u2013 would be clad in blue-black fibre cement tiles. \u2018The dark colour brings down the scale of the building,\u2019 says Kris, whose design also included a separate wing for Nathan\u2019s children, Noah, 14, and Ava, 12, and a detached annexe for his mother Rosie and stepfather Albert. <\/span><\/p><div class=\"gdmag-content-2\" id=\"gdmag-1587053293\" data-cfpa=\"19928\" data-cfpw=\"19928\"><div class=\"gdmag-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><!-- code from Primis - granddesignsmagazine.com -->\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\" language=\"javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/live.primis.tech\/live\/liveView.php?s=116493&schain=1.0,1!grv.media,65,1\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- code from Primis --><\/div><script type=\"text\/javascript\">;new advadsCfpAd( 19928 );<\/script>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The structure incorporated huge amounts of insulation, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/heating\/mvhr-system-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR)<\/a>, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">system, and a solar photovoltaic (PV) array. These were at the bottom of the garden, along with a ground-source heat pump. Photo: Andy Haslam<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.channel4.com\/programmes\/grand-designs\/on-demand\/70446-002\"><strong>Watch the episode: South Lincolnshire, 2021<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Challenges to come<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The earliest challenge came when they realised that the marshy soil wouldn\u2019t support the\u00a0 weight and point loads of the steel frame, so 35 piles had to be driven 13m down into the silt. \u2018A timber house would have required much simpler foundations,\u2019 admits Nathan.<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">\u2018But we would have ended up with lots of visible supports <\/span>inside the house. This steel frame required much more engineering, but we really wanted the openness it would give to the interior.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The arrival of the couple\u2019s baby daughter Niamh halfway through the project drove work forward as quickly as possible. However, the next hurdle was when Covid-19 struck. \u2018Work did continue during lockdown, but it was hard to obtain materials so we were delayed by two months,\u2019 Nathan explains. Photo: Andy Haslam<\/p><\/div>\n<h2><strong>A bit of fun on the inside<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The vaulted interior is, they admit, an enormous space, but it\u2019s room they need when all three generations of the family get together. \u2018We have watched this house grow from the ground up,\u2019 says Amye. \u2018It\u2019s huge and open, but we don\u2019t see that on a day-to-day basis. What we see is our baby, our dog, our furniture and our photographs, and that just makes it feel like home.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Many interior elements had to be sourced while the shops were closed, but this didn\u2019t hold them back. \u2018We were very clear about the look we wanted, which made picking things like the flooring and kitchen really easy,\u2019 says Amye.
