{"id":24404,"date":"2025-07-20T09:25:33","date_gmt":"2025-07-20T08:25:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/?p=24404"},"modified":"2025-07-24T09:27:56","modified_gmt":"2025-07-24T08:27:56","slug":"every-house-from-grand-designs-series-spring-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/grand-designs-houses\/every-house-from-grand-designs-series-spring-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Every house from Grand Designs Series Spring 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Grand Designs spring series may have finished, but we are still not over the incredible new properties and revisits showcased in the first part of the 2025 series.<\/p>\n<p>It was a great series packed full of exciting new building projects, and revisiting some old favourites that were dear to our hearts.<\/p>\n<p>Presenter and Grand Designs legend, Kevin McCloud was on great form as always &#8211; providing much needed light relief and morale boosts to our dedicated self-builders.<\/p><div class=\"gdmag-content\" id=\"gdmag-15890704\" data-cfpa=\"20295\" data-cfpw=\"20295\"><div class=\"gdmag-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><div class=\"GRVMpuWrapper mobile\"><div class=\"GRVAd inline mobile\" data-ad-type=\"primary-mpu\" data-ad-label=\"mpu\" data-ad-sizemapping=\"primary-mpu\" data-ad-sizes=\"[[300,250],[300,600],[320,480]]\" data-ad-refreshmapping=\"always\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><script type=\"text\/javascript\">;new advadsCfpAd( 20295 );<\/script>\n<p>So to bridge the gap while we wait patiently for the second series of Grand Designs, airing in Autumn 2025, let&#8217;s recap over the amazing projects from the Spring 2025 series.<\/p>\n<h2>Floating house in Worthing<\/h2>\n<p>The series started with Howard and Sarah building a home on the water on the plot of a derelict World War Two landing craft.<\/p>\n<p>Who could forget this controversial piece of architecture? Not a boat, but based on water &#8211; with a build project that relied on the timings of the tide to get the work going.<\/p>\n<p>Extracting the original landing craft out of the mud taking far longer than expected, the fabrication of polystyrene floats, and trying to secure the structure before the tide comes in and it all potentially floating away were all memorable moments of this episode.<\/p><div class=\"gdmag-content-2\" id=\"gdmag-1309959226\" data-cfpa=\"19928\" data-cfpw=\"19928\"><div class=\"gdmag-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><!-- code from Primis - granddesignsmagazine.com -->\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\" language=\"javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/live.primis.tech\/live\/liveView.php?s=116493&schain=1.0,1!grv.media,65,1\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- code from Primis --><\/div><script type=\"text\/javascript\">;new advadsCfpAd( 19928 );<\/script>\n<p>Their huge sacrifices and the sheer effort, determination and costs involved were inevitably worth it though.<\/p>\n<p>Upon seeing the finished product, Kevin McCloud said: &#8220;It&#8217;s no longer like visiting grunge-central on the mud, it&#8217;s more like a secret naval base!&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_24411\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24411\" class=\"wp-image-24411 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/metro-pic-.jpg\" alt=\"Howard and Sarah with Kevin McCloud standing astride the floating house\" width=\"640\" height=\"431\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/metro-pic-.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/metro-pic--250x168.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/metro-pic--120x81.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-24411\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Channel 4<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.channel4.com\/programmes\/grand-designs\/on-demand\/73532-003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Catch up on the Worthing house episode here<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/grand-designs-houses\/floating-house-worthing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read the full story of the Worthing floating house here<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Bedfordshire Barn<\/h2>\n<p>Pip and Sarah&#8217;s barn conversion in Bedfordshire &#8211; attempting to retain the charm and spirit of the original structure whilst combining their sleek and modern design ideas.<\/p><div class=\"gdmag-prop-primary-mpu\" id=\"gdmag-8956716\" data-cfpa=\"20294\" data-cfpw=\"20294\"><div class=\"gdmag-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><div class=\"GRVMpuWrapper\"><div class=\"GRVAd inline\" data-ad-type=\"mpu\" data-ad-sizes=\"[[300,250]]\" data-ad-refreshmapping=\"always\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><script type=\"text\/javascript\">;new advadsCfpAd( 20294 );<\/script>\n<p>The 150-year-old barn looked ready to keel over at first glance, and when we first met the couple, the project had already been delayed by seven months due to planning issues.<\/p>\n<p>As an ancient monument, the site is legally protected so the couple are only able to do shallow digging on the site for drainage purposes.<\/p>\n<p>Even that made for difficult viewing as, during a archaeologist visit from Historic England, queries were raised over the permissions to dig at all.<\/p>\n<p>The process took a real toll on both Pip and Sarah, especially when they both had to part with prized possessions to keep the build going.<\/p><div class=\"gdmag-prop-in-content-mpu\" id=\"gdmag-2758281071\" data-cfpa=\"20294\" data-cfpw=\"20294\"><div class=\"gdmag-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><div class=\"GRVMpuWrapper\"><div class=\"GRVAd inline\" data-ad-type=\"mpu\" data-ad-sizes=\"[[300,250]]\" data-ad-refreshmapping=\"always\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><script type=\"text\/javascript\">;new advadsCfpAd( 20294 );<\/script>\n<p>It was all worthwhile in the end though. And Kathryn made it happen in her eighties!<\/p>\n<p>To make it happen, Kathryn&#8217;s team had to demolish the garage extension and music room next door, to then build the new semi-detached property on the site.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Kathryn saved materials from the original site to use in the new house to maintain that connection.<\/p>\n<p>This project wasn&#8217;t without difficulties &#8211; just like every Grand Designs project. The couple craved a safe, stable space with security for their daughters.<\/p><div class=\"gdmag-prop-in-content-mpu-4\" id=\"gdmag-2721908964\" data-cfpa=\"20294\" data-cfpw=\"20294\"><div class=\"gdmag-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><div class=\"GRVMpuWrapper\"><div class=\"GRVAd inline\" data-ad-type=\"mpu\" data-ad-sizes=\"[[300,250]]\" data-ad-refreshmapping=\"always\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><script type=\"text\/javascript\">;new advadsCfpAd( 20294 );<\/script>\n<p>Their chosen plot was hemmed in by neighbouring gardens, a garage, and a footpath.<\/p>\n<p>Considering the plot is half the footprint of the average UK home the biggest issue was creating space for the family.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, on the last visit, the couple had been left with a &#8216;monster in the basement&#8217; which had halted proceedings as they were stuck where they had got to in the project.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, on return some good news was had as they had managed to overcome the issue &#8211; and even better, the company responsible had foot the bill.<\/p>\n<p>This meant that they were able to finish the rest of the house, and are now happily living there.<\/p>\n<div id=\"the_content\">\n<p>\u00a0From the ashes of loss, a wonderful phoenix of a building has risen, surviving the trials of its construction.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23940\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23940\" class=\"wp-image-23940 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/heartbreaking-house-1.jpg\" alt=\"Grand Designs spring 2025 series\" width=\"640\" height=\"422\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/heartbreaking-house-1.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/heartbreaking-house-1-250x165.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/heartbreaking-house-1-120x79.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-23940\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Channel 4<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.channel4.com\/programmes\/grand-designs\/on-demand\/73533-009\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Catch up on the Hackney &#8216;Heartbreak House&#8217; revisit episode on All4<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/grand-designs-houses\/grand-designs-hackney-downs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Read the full story of their journey here<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Revisiting the &#8216;healthy house&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>One of the most inspiring and talked about episodes of Grand Designs ever, was Born and Elinor&#8217;s desire to create a house that was suitable for their children with severe allergies.<\/p>\n<p>The couple\u2019s sons, Avery and Pascal, have an array of allergies, including asthma.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the build, in Richmond, Surrey, the house was made with hypoallergenic materials, and VOCs and pollen levels were carefully monitored during the project.<\/p>\n<p>The couple moved in, just before completion, on Christmas Eve 2017, so this revisit was an amazing opportunity to see if the house had managed to help the family, eight years on.<\/p>\n<h3>Revisiting<\/h3>\n<p>There is now a mature terraced garden that softens and elevates the building, with lots of greenery.<\/p>\n<p>Once we head inside the building, it\u2019s clear to see it, and its occupants have matured, too.<\/p>\n<p>Their doctor has seen a significant improvement in the health, with a definite reduction in hospital visits, adding: \u201cIt could be that they\u2019re breathing clean air inside the home, but I don\u2019t know for sure. For this family, the house feeds into their ethos of good health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The children are participating avidly in sports, even running in national cross country events &#8211; which is something Elinor and Born would never have expected when we met them last.<\/p>\n<p>As Kevin states: &#8220;It\u2019s easy to measure the cost, size and performance of a home but it\u2019s much harder to measure the effects they have on human beings.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This journey has been one of hope and faith that this building could do something positive, to a position where I\u2019m taken aback as to how well the building has done.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt provides a baseline of care and protection and its helped the pair of them to climb down from that state of high alert.
