It was one of the most iconic builds on Grand Designs ever and actually was billed one of the saddest episodes ever.<\/p>\n<p>It has hit the headlines in recent times as the town its placed in has been named as a top surfing location in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>But where did it all begin?<\/p><div class=\"gdmag-content\" id=\"gdmag-1285275548\" data-cfpa=\"20295\" data-cfpw=\"20295\"><div class=\"gdmag-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><div class=\"GRVMpuWrapper mobile\"><div class=\"GRVAd inline mobile\" data-ad-type=\"primary-mpu\" data-ad-label=\"mpu\" data-ad-sizemapping=\"primary-mpu\" data-ad-sizes=\"[[300,250],[300,600],[320,480]]\" data-ad-refreshmapping=\"always\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><script type=\"text\/javascript\">;new advadsCfpAd( 20295 );<\/script>\n<h2>What is the Grand Designs lighthouse?<\/h2>\n<p>We first heard the story of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/grand-designs-houses\/grand-designs-lighthouse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grand Designs Lighthouse<\/a> back in 2019, when it aired on our screens, but the real story began back in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>Edward and his wife Hazel bought a 1950s clifftop home in Croyde Bay. It was perched above two rocky coves and was deemed perfect for bringing up their two daughters.<\/p>\n<p>But, the family felt the house didn&#8217;t match the setting, so decided to replace it with a modern mansion.<\/p>\n<p>Planning approval was granted in 2010, and the couple expected to pay for the build through savings and borrowing. This was more than originally planned but costs were skyrocketing.<\/p>\n<p>The plan to sell The Eye to help with spiralling costs failed as the value was reduced due to the hazardous building site.<\/p><div class=\"gdmag-prop-primary-mpu\" id=\"gdmag-1203913003\" data-cfpa=\"20294\" data-cfpw=\"20294\"><div class=\"gdmag-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><div class=\"GRVMpuWrapper\"><div class=\"GRVAd inline\" data-ad-type=\"mpu\" data-ad-sizes=\"[[300,250]]\" data-ad-refreshmapping=\"always\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><script type=\"text\/javascript\">;new advadsCfpAd( 20294 );<\/script>\n<p>This meant in 2018 the project was stalled, leaving them with \u00a34 million in debt.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the pressure of it all meant that Edward and Hazel separated.<\/p>\n<p>However, all was not totally lost. It took two years to agree new terms, but Edward was able to settle the debt and raise new funds with work restarting in April 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The house was completed, and along with The Eye (which cost \u00a31 million to build), the lighthouse was put up for sale in summer 2022 for \u00a310 million.<\/p><div class=\"gdmag-prop-in-content-mpu\" id=\"gdmag-2320104734\" data-cfpa=\"20294\" data-cfpw=\"20294\"><div class=\"gdmag-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><div class=\"GRVMpuWrapper\"><div class=\"GRVAd inline\" data-ad-type=\"mpu\" data-ad-sizes=\"[[300,250]]\" data-ad-refreshmapping=\"always\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><script type=\"text\/javascript\">;new advadsCfpAd( 20294 );<\/script>\n<p>Fast forward to now, and Croyde Bay in North Devon, where the lighthouse was built, has been named one of the best surfing locations in the UK.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-13717 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/chesil-cliff-lighthouse-1.jpg\" alt=\"Edward Short's Lighthouse home form the saddest ever Grand Designs episode sits on a clifftop in North Devon\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/chesil-cliff-lighthouse-1.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/chesil-cliff-lighthouse-1-250x188.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/chesil-cliff-lighthouse-1-120x90.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>A spectacular surf<\/h2>\n<p>The research on surfing spots, released by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaltrust.org.uk\/membership?campid=PPC_Central_Membership_Brand-BAU_bing-Search-BrandPure-RSA-BAU&amp;dfaid=1&amp;gclid=04a4f35c06d61e2b9d589b6459fe6578&amp;gclsrc=3p.ds&amp;msclkid=04a4f35c06d61e2b9d589b6459fe6578\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Trust,<\/a> states that Croyde Bay offers a &#8216;faster wave&#8217;, proving to be popular with advanced shortboard surfers.<\/p>\n<p>Croyde has an estimated population of 600-700 people and has a three mile long stunning sandy beach.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are also opportunities for less experienced surfers, with a selection of surf schools to choose from.<\/p><div class=\"gdmag-prop-in-content-mpu-2\" id=\"gdmag-143082892\" data-cfpa=\"20294\" data-cfpw=\"20294\"><div class=\"gdmag-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><div class=\"GRVMpuWrapper\"><div class=\"GRVAd inline\" data-ad-type=\"mpu\" data-ad-sizes=\"[[300,250]]\" data-ad-refreshmapping=\"always\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><script type=\"text\/javascript\">;new advadsCfpAd( 20294 );<\/script>\n<p>However, you need to beware of the rocks and rip \u2013 especially as the waves get bigger,&#8221;
