Image credit: Charles Emerson<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The original barn, used for silage and storing heavy machinery, remains.<\/p><div class=\"gdmag-content-2\" id=\"gdmag-1444670696\" data-cfpa=\"19928\" data-cfpw=\"19928\"><div class=\"gdmag-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><!-- code from Primis - granddesignsmagazine.com -->\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\" language=\"javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/live.primis.tech\/live\/liveView.php?s=116493&schain=1.0,1!grv.media,65,1\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- code from Primis --><\/div><script type=\"text\/javascript\">;new advadsCfpAd( 19928 );<\/script>\n<p>Yet inside sits the Green&#8217;s home, a new building clad in salvaged timber.<\/p>\n<p>Between the two are \u2018hybrid\u2019 spaces the family uses as an outside kitchen, a \u2018winter garden\u2019, and even \u2018reflecting pools\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a design that is original, striking and sustainable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love that it looks like a barn,\u201d laughs Steph. \u201cAnd it\u2019s a surprise when you get inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the couple didn\u2019t start their build journey with this design in mind.<\/p><div class=\"gdmag-prop-primary-mpu\" id=\"gdmag-3155336978\" data-cfpa=\"20294\" data-cfpw=\"20294\"><div class=\"gdmag-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><div class=\"GRVMpuWrapper\"><div class=\"GRVAd inline\" data-ad-type=\"mpu\" data-ad-sizes=\"[[300,250]]\" data-ad-refreshmapping=\"always\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><script type=\"text\/javascript\">;new advadsCfpAd( 20294 );<\/script>\n<p>Chris, a chef-turned-hotelier, comes from a farming family, and they offered Steph and Chris an unused barn.<\/p>\n<p>Then, the couple asked Wiltshire-based architect Rob Elkins of <a href=\"https:\/\/artel31.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Artel 31<\/a> to come up with a design.<\/p>\n<p>This creative practice of young architects puts creativity and sustainability at the heart of everything they do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe love everything Rob at Artel 31 has designed,\u201d says Steph.<\/p><div class=\"gdmag-prop-in-content-mpu\" id=\"gdmag-2392316806\" data-cfpa=\"20294\" data-cfpw=\"20294\"><div class=\"gdmag-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><div class=\"GRVMpuWrapper\"><div class=\"GRVAd inline\" data-ad-type=\"mpu\" data-ad-sizes=\"[[300,250]]\" data-ad-refreshmapping=\"always\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><script type=\"text\/javascript\">;new advadsCfpAd( 20294 );<\/script>\n<p>Even so, Steph took a little persuasion to embrace the sustainable barn design.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t get it at first; my husband got it. Image credit: Charles Emerson.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The couple also asked Artel 31 to convert the barn and construct the home,\u00a0 preventing any potential problems caused by poor communication between different companies. This was a good choice, and the build went smoothly.<\/p>\n<p>Keeping both sustainability and a\u00a0 visual connection to the building&#8217;s agricultural roots in mind, Rob&#8217;s design for this eco-friendly barn conversion cleverly re-used parts of the original structure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe used [the barn\u2019s] steel frame and its existing foundations,\u201d explains Rob.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut these were bolstered by new footings under some of the timber frame walls [of the new house].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Next, they re-used some timber cladding from the barn to clad the walls of the house, plus some new, rough-sawn treated softwood to match.<\/p><div class=\"gdmag-prop-in-content-mpu-3\" id=\"gdmag-296989596\" data-cfpa=\"20294\" data-cfpw=\"20294\"><div class=\"gdmag-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><div class=\"GRVMpuWrapper\"><div class=\"GRVAd inline\" data-ad-type=\"mpu\" data-ad-sizes=\"[[300,250]]\" data-ad-refreshmapping=\"always\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><script type=\"text\/javascript\">;new advadsCfpAd( 20294 );<\/script>\n<p>\u201cThis will age and blend with the reused lumber,\u201d says Rob.<\/p>\n<h2>Going Green<\/h2>\n<p>Although the timber cladding makes the house design look rustic, the home is at the cutting edge of renewable technology.<\/p>\n<p>Steph and Chris were keen to avoid any fossil fuels, so they installed solar panels for electricity and an air source heat pump for heating &#8211; now, this highly insulated home stays a comfortable 20 degrees.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Steph and Chris chose a mechanical ventilation and heat recovery system.<\/p>\n<p>This is a whole-house system that draws in fresh filtered air and vents stale air after extracting the heat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe MVHR was our best decision,\u201d says Steph.<\/p><div class=\"gdmag-prop-in-content-mpu-4\" id=\"gdmag-2241491182\" data-cfpa=\"20294\" data-cfpw=\"20294\"><div class=\"gdmag-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><div class=\"GRVMpuWrapper\"><div class=\"GRVAd inline\" data-ad-type=\"mpu\" data-ad-sizes=\"[[300,250]]\" data-ad-refreshmapping=\"always\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><script type=\"text\/javascript\">;new advadsCfpAd( 20294 );<\/script>\n<p>\u201cThere are no odours from cooking, and dust levels have improved, although it does take up a lot of space.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Seeing the Light<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_24174\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24174\" class=\"wp-image-24174\" src=\"https:\/\/www.granddesignsmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Internal-polycarbonate-wall.jpg\" alt=\"Inside the house, the polycarbonate wall creates a diffuse light. Image credit: Charles Emerson.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Light was important to this project, and architect Rob Elkins took a technical approach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe used software to ensure a high-quality internal environment with sufficient light, while regulating heat gain in the summer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This meant the house was positioned to enjoy as much winter sun as possible, which helps to keep it warm, but Rob cut the barn\u2019s roof to act as a sunshade, preventing overheating.<br \/>\n\u201cWe were afraid it would be too hot in the summer,\u201d says Steph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the angles mean it is warm in winter and cool in the summer. The barn acts as a brise soleil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another eco-friendly innovation by Rob was a pioneering multilayered polycarbonate wall on one side of the house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s a semi-opaque wall that glows internally by day and externally by night, animating the space while maintaining a U-value of 0.13,\u201d says Rob.<\/p>\n<p>Steph describes it as an \u201coptical illusion\u201d that creates a \u201cdiffuse and gentle light. Image credit: Charles Emerson<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Perhaps the most extraordinary part of this sustainable barn conversion&#8217;s interior is the reused concrete panels.<\/p>\n<p>These and the exposed concrete flooring absorb heat and release it slowly, creating a stable indoor environment.<\/p>\n<p>Yet old concrete, complete with rusty screws and chunks gouged out by diggers, isn\u2019t to everyone\u2019s taste.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love the way Rob re-used two original panels to break up the space and act as heat sinks. It is very clever,\u201d says Steph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey bring honesty to the house, which is sharp and modern overall.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I find them solid and reassuring. Image credit: Charles Emerson.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>With this eco-friendly home, there\u2019s plenty of space for everyone and Steph and Chris\u2019 two boys enjoy having a cinema room.<\/p>\n<p>This room doesn\u2019t have \u2013 or need \u2013 any windows and was the perfect choice to place on the side of the building next to a public footpath, as there\u2019s no overlooking.<\/p>\n<p>Steph particularly enjoys working in her home office, a pod that projects out and over the outdoor kitchen, it has lovely views of the surrounding countryside, and &#8220;at\u00a0the moment, the lambs are out, and I can barely work for laughing! It\u2019s joyful,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The open-plan kitchen and dining space has been a huge hit with the family. As Steph walked through Clifton in Bristol one day, she passed <a href=\"https:\/\/home-design-schmidt.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Schmidt Kitchens<\/a> and decided to pop in.<\/p>\n<p>Impressed by the quality and the designs on offer, she commissioned a chic, contemporary kitchen with black cabinetry and contrasting pale oak doors.<\/p>\n<p>The countertops are quartz, with a waterfall edge on the island. With a boiling water tap from specialists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quooker.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Quooker<\/a> and a slide-out drawer for the coffee machine, it is designed and built exactly for the family\u2019s needs.<\/p>\n<p>Steph and Chris hosted 19 guests for Christmas last year with ease.<\/p>\n<p>Although the kitchen cost approximately \u00a310,000 more than a typical high street brand, Steph feels it was worth it for the quality and the \u201cmost fantastic\u201d customer service.<\/p>\n<h2>Putting Down Roots<\/h2>\n<p>Now the family has moved in, Steph and Chris feel that their new home has exceeded their brief.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re quite adventurous people and this was a leap of faith,\u201d laughs Steph. \u201cOur high point was moving in.
